The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to join Plessey Semiconductors as a Degree Apprentice Electro-mechanical Engineer. The apprentice will work alongside experienced engineers in a cutting-edge manufacturing environment while studying for a Level 6 engineering degree with the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.
Essential skills or qualities:
- A passion for engineering, with a desire to understand how things work and how to fix them.
- Practical curiosity — you enjoy building, taking things apart, or working with tools, electronics, or mechanical systems (this could be from hobbies, projects, or schoolwork).
- A good foundation in maths and science, with the ability to apply logical thinking to solve problems.
- An organized and methodical approach, with attention to detail when following instructions or working on equipment.
- A willingness to learn and develop new technical skills, both on the job and through academic study.
- Good communication skills, with the confidence to ask questions and share ideas.
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- A positive, proactive attitude and a sense of responsibility for your work.
- An interest in working in a fast-paced, high-tech manufacturing environment.
Essential qualifications:
A-levels (or equivalent) including Mathematics at B and an additional science subject at B, or a relevant Level 3 engineering qualification including BTEC Extended Diploma and T Levels in an engineering related discipline.
Desired skills or qualifications:
Some prior exposure to mechanical or electrical systems experience in laboratory or workshop settings. Hand skills in maintenance/repair or assembly.
Wage: Competitive apprenticeship salary (to be confirmed)
Working hours per week: 37.5 hours
Working pattern: Monday to Friday, 8am – 4:30pm

How to apply for a degree apprenticeship
The process to apply for a degree apprenticeship varies slightly depending on whether you are currently employed or an aspiring employee. Details of the process for both are outlined below.
Step 1: Research apprenticeship opportunities available to you

Step 2a: Current employees - next steps
Check you meet eligibility rules and entry criteria
- Check online to see if you meet the ESFA funding rules
- Check the programme pages to see if you meet the entry criteria
Get approval to apply
- Once you’ve decided which apprenticeship you’d like to study and when you’d like to start, speak to your line manager and/or HR team about applying
- You need to achieve sign-off at relevant levels of approval before you complete the application form for the apprenticeship
Step 2b: Aspiring employees - next steps
Apply to relevant opportunities
- Once you’ve decided which apprenticeship you’d like to study, keep a look out for opportunities
- Register your interest for apprenticeships offered with the University or
- Regularly visit employer websites to search through the vacancies they’re offering
Take part in the selection process
- Different employers have varying selection processes. You may have to attend for an interview, or have additional stages to complete
- As part of the process, we’ll check with the employer if you meet the eligibility and entry criteria
Receive offer from employer
- If you receive an offer from the company, congratulations! You can now progress to the next stage of applying for your degree apprenticeship
Step 3: Apply to the University
Get in touch with our degree apprenticeship team via the relevant contact details for your chosen programme. You’ll be sent an application email outlining the next steps to apply.
Once your application has been reviewed, you will be notified of the outcome via email from the University’s central admissions team. If your application is successful, you will need to accept your offer via the instructions in the email.
Step 4: Enrol with the University and start your degree apprenticeship!
Once you have completed the above steps, you will be sent further information about how to register to be a student at the University, and you will have to sign some paperwork alongside your employer.
That's it! You will be gaining new skills, knowledge, and experience in the workplace and through your studies, giving you a head start in your future career.
