Dr Daniel Fountain is Senior Lecturer and Director of Postgraduate Research in Art History and Visual Culture. An art historian, artist, and curator, they are internationally recognised as a leading voice in queer contemporary art and craft. The international art publication Apollo has described Daniel as ¡°among the most influential and talented people working in the space between art and craft¡±, while the UK Crafts Council identifies them as a ¡°world-leading authority on queer craft.¡±

Daniel¡¯s research focuses on LGBTQ+ visual culture and queer and feminist art practices. They are the author of two major books,? (2026) and (2023). They have also published widely in five edited collections as well as in peer-reviewed journals, including GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies, Art History, MAI: Feminism and Visual Culture, and TEXTILE: Cloth and Culture.

As an internationally exhibited artist, Daniel¡¯s practice uses textile and needlework techniques to explore themes of marginality and belonging. Working with found fabrics and discarded materials, they adopt a ¡°scavenger methodology¡± and a "non-binary approach", reclaiming historically derogatory language and transforming it into expressions of resistance and play. Their work has been widely published, including in?Surface Design Journal, Crafts, Decorating Dissidence, and Embroidery: The Textile Art Magazine.

Daniel¡¯s curatorial and advisory practice is grounded in research-led, publicly engaged approaches, collaborating with international museums and galleries to advance inclusive cultural practices and public impact. Recent collaborations include with National Museums Liverpool, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, and the Crafts Council, alongside invited lectures at Tate, the Whitworth Art Gallery, and the Museum for Art in Wood. Through this combined research, practice, and public engagement portfolio, Daniel has generated new knowledge of LGBTQ+ histories and experiences with demonstrable influence across academia, cultural institutions, charities, and government bodies.?

A committed educator, Daniel has taught across the UK, the United States, and Canada at undergraduate to doctoral levels. Before joining the university in 2021, they held positions at Nottingham Trent University, Manchester School of Art, and Loughborough University. Daniel is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds a PhD in Feminism, Sexual Politics and Visual Culture from Loughborough University.
